How to Extract a Signature from an Image
Upload a photo or scan, remove the surrounding paper, and export the isolated handwriting as a transparent PNG.
- 1. Upload your imageChoose a photo or scanned image containing your handwritten signature.
- 2. Remove the backgroundReview the automatic result. If needed, open Advanced settings to recover faint strokes or remove remaining paper.

Signature Background Removal: Before and After Examples
These fictional-name scan simulations were made for this tool, not taken from personal documents. Every result was generated by the same cleanup algorithm as the workbench. Download an original to reproduce it; the checkerboard is a preview background and is not part of the PNG.
Black ink on white paper

Automatic cleanup removes the even white paper while retaining the dark strokes.

Compare the automatic result before adjustment
Raise Background threshold to 210 and lower Noise cleanup to 2 to recover pale edges. Original keeps the pale ink; choose Black for a darker mark.

Blue ink on white paper

Automatic cleanup keeps the source blue. Black and Blue in the workbench are optional recoloring choices.

This mild shading clears automatically. It does not demonstrate removal of every kind of photographic shadow.

The automatic result retains part of the shadow. Lowering the threshold can also erase handwriting; use flatter lighting and retake the photo.

The tool works best with handwritten signatures photographed or scanned on white or light-colored paper. Use even lighting and avoid glare or shadows across the ink. It removes the surrounding paper background and isolates the signature strokes so you can save them as a transparent PNG.
Remove a white background without losing thin strokes
Lower Background threshold when paper or shadows remain visible. If parts of the handwriting disappear, raise the threshold before increasing Ink strength. Noise cleanup removes faint specks, but an aggressive value can also erase fine pen marks. The live before-and-after canvases make each adjustment visible before download.
Use the transparent signature in Word and other documents
A transparent PNG removes the white rectangle around a scanned signature, so it can sit cleanly over document backgrounds, forms, PDFs, presentations, and images. For a guided workflow, see how to add a signature in Word. An inserted signature image is not the same as a certificate-based digital signature; use the format required by the recipient.
Signature background remover FAQ
Is this signature background remover free?
Yes. You can upload a signature image, adjust the cleanup, and download a transparent PNG without paying or creating an account.
Can it remove a white background from a signature?
Yes. It works best with dark ink on white or light paper. Adjust the background threshold to remove more paper while preserving the signature strokes.
Is my signature image uploaded?
No. Image processing runs locally in your browser, so the signature photo and transparent result are not sent to a SignatureOdyssey server.
How do I extract a signature from an image?
Upload the image for automatic cleanup, review the result, optionally adjust advanced settings, and download a tightly cropped transparent PNG.
Can I extract a signature from a photo?
Yes. Photos with a clear handwritten signature on a light, relatively uniform background work best. For cleaner results, use a well-lit image with good contrast between the ink and paper.
Can I use the transparent signature in Word?
Yes. Insert the downloaded PNG as a picture in Word, then resize and position it where an image signature is appropriate.
